Uncle Sam wants Gen Y!

uncle_sam.jpgActually the title of this post should be ‘Uncle Sam needs Gen Y’. As we all know, corporate America is facing an impending labor shortage, the same holds true in the government sector. From the IRS to the FBI our Uncle Sammy is hiring.

Some would say that Gen Y and government go together like Hilary Clinton and NASCAR, but hold on a moment. If what we read is true, that Gen Y wants to make a difference, that they value work/life balance, and want financial security, then government careers actually are a nice fit.

Casual Dress Friday: Thanksgiving ‘Did you know?’

As we roll along the long holiday weekend and most of you are hopefully off shopping, decorating, or still digesting. I’ll close out the week with a little Thanksgiving trivia. Enjoy!

Mayflower Myths
The reason that we have so many myths associated with Thanksgiving is that it is an invented tradition. It doesn’t originate in any one event. It is based on the New England puritan Thanksgiving, which is a religious Thanksgiving, and the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England and maybe other ideas like commemorating the pilgrims. All of these have been gathered together and transformed into something different from the original parts.

Myth: The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 and the pilgrims celebrated it every year thereafter

Fact: The first feast wasn’t repeated, so it wasn’t the beginning of a tradition. In fact, the colonists didn’t even call the day Thanksgiving. To them, a thanksgiving was a religious holiday in which they would go to church and thank God for a specific event, such as the winning of a battle. On such a religious day, the types of recreational activities that the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians participated in during the 1621 harvest feast–dancing, singing secular songs, playing games–wouldn’t have been allowed. The feast was a secular celebration, so it never would have been considered a thanksgiving in the pilgrims minds.

Gay in the workplace? Better stay in the closet…for now

gay_pride.jpgYou know how every once in a while you read news that makes you wonder what year it is? Well, that happened to me this morning. I’m going through my reader and I stumbled across a piece in Career Journal titled, ‘House Approves Measure to Bar Bias Against Gays in the Workplace’. What? Is this 2007 or 1907? Seriously, I had no idea this was still an issue, shame on me.

The article basically spells out that currently while nineteen states have already enacted laws to bar such discrimination in the workplace, but it is currently legal in 30 states to fire a worker based on sexual orientation. Are you F*cking kidding me?! But wait it gets better, after passing the house, the White House is threatening to veto the bill, saying the bill is constitutionally inconsistent with the free exercise of religion and uses language that is “imprecise” and makes enforcement “extremely difficult.”. Leave it to ‘Dubya’ to NOT fix anything!

I’m not a big ‘Call your congressman or senator’ guy, but this is just ridiculous! So if this outrages you, and it should, call, email, or write your senator and insist they pass this in the Senate and shove it up ‘Dubya’s a$$!

Until next time…
