justin_driscoll1.pngEarlier this week I posted an interview with Justin Driscoll author of the book ‘7 Things I Wish I Knew before I Graduated’.  Today is part two, the review of Justin’s book itself.

One of the unique things that struck me in reading Justin’s book was his perspective.  Justin confides early on in his book that his viewpoints are from the 24 year old perspective, someone who has had enough experience to look back and see what they could have done better.  I could write and have about the do’s and don’ts for young professionals, but the viewpoint of someone like Justin, who is fresh from that experience carries more weight.  It’s easy to see that Justin has learned much in his few years in the workforce.

A number of things stand out in Justin’s book.  First, it’s information that I wish I would have had when I was in college.  The career best practices are spot on with an emphasis on preparation, planning and networking.  Second, Justin calls out the basic core values that companies value today; integrity, innovation, character, and flexibility.  Read almost any companies mission statement and you will find these words peppered throughout.  Finally as a career development blogger, it was validating to me to find that many of the things I espouse on this site are still accurate for young professionals.  I live and work in the world of seasoned professionals.  I know what it takes to get here, but it’s good to see that Gen Y recognizes those same values and traits.

Overall I would highly recommend this book for anyone in college or preparing to enter the workforce.  Justin’s simple truths are a great roadmap to career success.

Until next time…
