Casual Dress Friday: I’m starting my own cult
Every time I see Tom Cruise or one of the other diluted followers of Scientology popping off about psychiatry or saving the world I am more and more convinced I missed my calling. I should have started my own cult….er….religion. Maybe I still will. I’m fairly sure if L Ron Hubbard, who by most accounts was a second rate science fiction author, can do it, I certainly can.
Unless you’ve been searching the galaxy for the second coming of L Ron, then you’ve seen the various iterations of what I’m calling the Tom Cruise tapes. They’ve been up and down on Youtube in the last couple of weeks more than Britney’s photog du jour. You know the ones, that show Tom Cruise saluting some Hitler wannabe and then accepting a medallion that looks more like a rodeo beltbuckle. Then there’s the one with Tom talking about how it’s a privilege to be a Scientologist and how it’s the best money he ever spent or something like that.
Natually, video like that is fodder that’s just too juicy not to warrant a spoof or two and the people over at funnyordie.com are all over it. So with that said, I’ll leave you to enjoy the talents of Jerry O’Connell as Tom Cruise…somewhere Oscar is watching. As for me, I’m going to curl up with a copy of Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, I’m almost to the part where we find out that cigarettes stunted Tom’s growth. Maybe Scientology has a cure.
Until next time…

Beware the Tattler
We all know that part of any good job search eventually leads to posting your resume at one or more of the various job boards. Many of us tend to leave our resumes posted even after securing a new job ( I know I do this) or sometimes if we will post a resume just to test the waters. But what happens if someone in your current company sees your resume. If you’re not aware of it, recruiters have subscriptions that let them mine the internet job boards as the search for candidates against their open positions. The question then is, if they find a resume of a current employee can they or should they be obligated to notify your manager? Remember my post about HR not being your friend?
Over at collegerecruiter.com, Steven Rothberg feels that HR should definitely notify your boss, but with the disclaimer that this doesn’t mean you’re actively looking. Perhaps Steven is naive, but I believe if HR notifies your boss nothing good will come from it. Feels a lot like tattling and really not for any good reason.
I definitely advocate posting your resume anytime you’d like to test the waters or just to see what’s out there and in today’s job market if HR finds out, so what? Rather than tattling they should be focused on how to retain talent, as opposed to tattling to the supervisor. It hasn’t always been that the employee has the leverage, but in a tight job market we definitely do. So don’t fear the tattler, post away
Until next time…

All I really needed to know about business, I learned waiting tables
Like many college students, I worked my way through school waiting tables. I started off at the good ol’ Village Inn, but worked my way up to more fine dining establishments over the years. Not as big a leap as you might imagine. As my career has grown in the business world I am constantly reminded of all the little things I learned waiting tables that continue to serve me in the business world.
I credit my college degree with opening many doors professionally, but I truly believe it’s what I learned waiting tables that has allowed me to achieve the success I’ve realized so far. Many people look down their noses at wait staff, but if they spent 30 mins in their shoes and they’d have a new appreciation for how difficult their job is.
